ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY FOLDOUT CARDBOARD SLEEVE WITH EXTENSIVE SONG NOTES
Twelve of their favourite folk songs - a whole shipload! Recorded with acoustic guitars, mandolin, banjo, and piano, and their trademark warm vocal sound. In addition, Jordan D. Ilott plays lilting Dobro, Lee Williams and Jed Hudson play thoughtful and evocative bass. Clara Barrs adds soaring violin to some of the tracks. Additional instrumentation is provided by Barleyshakes' outstanding violinist Kristin Kelly plus their front man, Al Kelly, on bodhran.
Some of these songs have been around for a few hundred years, but somehow they seem fresh and new as the spring. Penny & Roger bring their usual sense of love and respect to the songs they have chosen, both in the uncluttered arrangements and in their interpretations. A must-have for your folk collection.

IN SEARCH OF THE FRUIT TRAIN RM128
The Story of the Amiens Branch Railway Line 1919-1974
Currently available by special request only
In Search of the Fruit Train is the history of a short-lived railway line that ran from the main line at Cottonvale (north of Stanthorpe), out through the Soldier Settlement, which was created in the Stanthorpe (QLD) district just after WWI. The sidings and stations were named after battlefields in France. The rail line was created to carry fruit, vegetables and other produce from the farms along the line to join the regular train to access the markets in Brisbane.
This recording features the history of the rail line in a format which encourages its use in a classroom or as a library resource. The voices of the people who campaigned for the rail line to be built, those who built it,
those who used the line and lived alongside it, are brought to life.
Some of the people who still remember the line
(which closed in 1974) have contributed their voices too.
In Search of the Fruit Train is not intended to be a definitive history; it is designed to encourage further exploration and study of local history. The album is in the form of a 45 minute radio documentary. Will be of interest to Train Buffs and Local History Buffs alike!
Email us at restless_music@yahoo.com.au to find out how to access this dramatic oral history.

GARY SHEARSTON
RM180 Download only
In the 1960s, the Australian singer-songwriter Gary Shearston recorded a run of highly regarded and influential albums mixing his original compositions and Australian folk tunes. One of his songs, Sometime Lovin', became a hit for Peter, Paul and Mary; and in 1974 Gary had a worldwide hit with his cover version of Cole Porter's
I Get a Kick Out of You (arranged by Jim Parker).
After a long and varied career in music, followed by a stint as an Anglican priest, Gary came back to writing and recording his songs when he discovered Restless Music's studios only an hour's drive from his home in Tenterfield. After recording a considerable number of songs at the studio - many of which were released on albums by Undercover, Gary died after a stroke aged 74, in July 2013.
As The Guardian obituary noted "Gary believed in the social and redemptive power of song, and he also knew a good tune when he heard it. His lyrics were literate, sometimes didactic but more often witty and wise, and his vocal was characterised by warm, unmistakably Aussie vowels. The DJ, John Peel, a fan, noted that he could "sense the heat and wild friendliness of Australia" in Gary's voice."
This album was a collection of which Gary was very proud and we are pleased and proud to be able to bring these songs to the public by whom Gary wished them to be heard and loved.
Reverently is Gary at his most philosophical. The songs are lovingly crafted by Gary, with Roger Ilott providing evocative and moving arrangements.
REVIEW FROM AUSTRALIAN OPTIONS Summer 2013/2014 #75
Reviewed by Jack Humphrys
This work came out just after Gary Shearston died in early July last year. It shows Shearston’s gift of writing and singing songs of significance, continued until the end.
The theme of ‘ love and other struggles’ shine through fine songs - the title track Reverently, About Just Loving You, To The Soul Of Life, Voices in the Wilderness and In the Casino of Life. Woman in the Moon is the most intriguing track with Waiting for the Light, a powerful antiwar anthem.
The Australian context, particularly that New England region in northern NSW, has always been there with Gary Shearston, wherever he has been in the world - he sings with joy the song, Old New England Range.
He is beautifully supported by his fellow musicians- multi instrumentalist Roger Ilott, vocalist Penny Davies, percussionist Jordan Davies-Ilott and others.
Along with songs from Shearston’s four other original albums released this century, a number could be musical accompaniments to the wise Hugh McKay’s insightful book The Good Life-What Makes a Life Worth Living? (Macmillan, 2013).
In the album notes, Roger Ilott, who co-produced the album with Gary Shearston, has the final word:
“Gary believed in love, social justice and peace. He believed the power of song could make the world a better place. I’ll miss him and his cheery, but sometimes world-weary ’Hello mate’- we’ll all miss him- but feel privileged to have been
able to help him get him so many of his musical thoughts, hopes and dreams out into the world.”

HILLS OF ASSISI
GARY SHEARSTON
RM187 CD
ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY MINI LP CARDBOARD SLEEVE
Gary Shearston is a legendary Australian folk singer, songwriter, and member of the radical Sydney “push”; an actor, activist, storyteller and deep thinker.
Starting off in the Australian folk movement in the 1950's and 60's, Gary travelled the world with his songs, experiencing both success and disappointment along the way. One of his songs,
Sometime Lovin', was recorded by Peter, Paul & Mary, who encouraged him to go to the USA. However, dogged by visa problems, he headed for Britain where he was to have a Number 1 hit with Cole Porter's
I Get a Kick out Of You in 1974. Ultimately the pinnacles, troughs and harsh realities of the music industry left him weary and unfulfilled.
As Gary says in the title song of the album;
“I had come from the quicksands of fortune and fame, I had come with a soul that was aching …” According to Gary his “road to Damascus moment” took place on the hills of Assisi (
“...where I changed from a seeker to a pilgrim…” ). That road led him all the way back to Australia and into the Church, where he spent many years as a Minister in rural NSW.
From the joyful descending notes of
Come Down Holy Spirit to the jubilant
Welcome Jesus, Welcome , listeners to these songs can travel the road along with him. Gary was a deeply spiritual person, and music was an intensely uplifting part of his being.
These songs explore his faith, his doubts, his hopes, friends he encountered along the way.
These are songs to be sung by a congregation, or listened to in quiet meditation.
Gary died in July 2013 leaving this album unreleased in Restless Music's archives.
We are pleased to make it available as a lasting tribute to a travelling song-man, an inspirational human being and friend.
TRACK LIST:
Come Down, Holy Spirit, In the Hills of Assisi, In The Shadow of His Wings, Jesus Said,
The Lord Is My Strength and My Shield, Stepping Stone, Come and Take of the Water, Farewell (You Good and Faithful Servants), The Promise,

PATHWAYS OF A CELTIC LAND
GARY SHEARSTON
RM183 Download
In the months before his sudden death from a stroke on July 1st, 2013, GARY SHEARSTON had been writing songs “as if there were no tomorrow”. The last years of his life had been incredibly productive, with three albums recorded and released between 2008 and 2012 for the Undercover label.
Those three albums - Best of All Trades (2008), Renegade (2010) and The Great Australian Groove (2012) were all recorded at Restless Music's country studio. At the time of his death Gary had also completed work on Reverently (released on the Restless label in August 2013). Meanwhile he had a multitude of songs already in the can. Some of these are now able to be heard on Pathways of a Celtic Land.
Restless Music's studio – just a short drive up the road from his Tenterfield home – was both convenient and accommodating. A wonderful, warm relationship had built up over several years with ROGER ILOTT, whose arrangements and instrumentation Gary had found to be just what he was searching for. Roger, (acoustic, electric guitars, keyboards, backing vocals) together with
Jordy Davies-Ilott (drums), Lee Williams (bass) and Penny Davies (backing vocals) have woven a powerful, sympathetic backing for Gary's acoustic guitar, authoritative voice and substantial lyrics. The songs on Pathways of a Celtic Land show Gary at his most philosophical - as always exploring topics close to his heart - love, justice, peace, faith and hope.
We are fortunate to have been left with songs which continue to shine so warmly on us.
TRACK LIST: PATHWAYS OF A CELTIC LAND, HONESTY, BE A SAVIOUR OF THE WORLD, ZUZA, SLOW GOING,
EXCEPT, HEY, JOB! PASCAL'S PUNT, HELLO, LIKE MORNING DEW

WATERBAG BALLADS - Songs of Max Fatchen
PENNY DAVIES & ROGER ILOTT
RM165 DOWNLOAD ONLY
The collaboration between Max Fatchen and Penny Davies & Roger Ilott began in 2001, when Penny & Roger heard Ian McNamara read “Call It Flamin' Hot” on ABC Radio's ‘Australia All Over' one Sunday.
They contacted him to ask if they could turn the poem into a song.
Max was so pleased with the idea that he sent along a few more poems that “sang” to him. From then on the songs began to proliferate and Max was thrilled that some of his poems
found a new audience through music.
As Ian McNamara says “ Max's poems ‘sing' to me, about love of country, especially his beloved South Australia……… - and he has made an enormous contribution to a Sunday morning programme,
for which
we and the listeners are extremely grateful.”
Max Fatchen was a journalist for the majority of his life, working for the Adelaide Advertiser in South Australia. He has written 20 books for children; his novels appear in seven countries and his poetry throughout the English-speaking world. Three of his books have received commendation in the Children's Book of the Year Award. He received the Order of Australia in 1980, the Advance Australia Award for literature in 1991, the Walkley Award for journalism in 1996, the Primary English Teaching Associations Award for children's poetry in 1996 and the SA Great Award for Literature in 1999 and the 2003 Centenary of Federation Medal for service to the community in journalism, poetry and writing for children. He was made Inaugural Life Member of SA Writers Centre in 2004 for long years of support, encouragement, and ambassadorship for the Centre.
This CD, WATERBAG BALLADS was sent off for manufacture just a few days after Max wrote his final column for the Advertiser (at the age of 92), and only a few days before Max died. He had heard all the songs in their final form and was full of enthusiasm for “my new career as a songwriter”. His work is full of warmth and humour and an almost child-like joy.
Penny Davies & Roger Ilott have been writing and singing together since the early 1980's. They are known also for their long musical collaboration with the Queensland poet Bill Scott. Their writing relationship with Max Fatchen has been both pleasurable and creatively fulfilling. He became a much loved friend and a creative muse.
Max will be missed around the world; but here in Australia – and particularly in South Australia -
there will be a huge gap in our literature that only Max could fill.
Penny and Roger hope these songs will bring Max's work to many more people around the country and around the world.
TRACKLIST: Rain On The Track, When The Cooper's Coming Down, The Hawker, On The Bridge,, Call It Flamin' Hot!

BOOMERANG BAY
PENNY DAVIES & ROGER ILOTT
RM156 DOWNLOAD
Talking about the theme of the album, Penny says, “It's about walking backwards into the future. We can see clearly only the past and we glimpse the future only vaguely over our shoulders as we walk. Everything we are and will be is informed by what we have already seen and done - the album is like a postcard from our past.”
The music embraces the magic land of childhood and a world filled with treasures washed up on the shore or floating free. It explores the paths that call our restless spirits and the joy we feel when the lives of animals touch ours.
The songs don't ignore reality – several of the songs highlight the devastation of many of our coastal and rural areas by over-development and the legacy of "progress”, and emphasise the state of the oceans and the land that could leave future generations of children bereft of the essential places which nurture both body and soul.
But whether the moon is full or dark, the night sky is full of stars and dreams. In this country the land is rich in spiritual resonance. The shifting colours of the tropics, the hidden fire of northern sunsets, and the powerful cleansing tropical rain are all there to heal us – along with music, which provides a soundtrack to our lives and helps us formulate our philosophies and values.
Penny and Roger are joined by Lee Williams (bass) and Jordan Davies-Ilott (drums) – and the mood is very acoustic with soaring pedal steel, warm, intimate vocals and glistening harmonies, Boomerang Bay features a recently discovered Bill Scott poem ‘Song Of The Answering Voices' set to music by Roger, as well as two songs by Gordon Bok and one by John Broomhall. The rest of the songs are by Penny & Roger and have their trademark thoughtful poetic and melodic touch.

MOON CALLER
PENNY DAVIES & ROGER ILOTT
RM138 CD and DOWNLOAD
MOON CALLER combines Penny Davies' moving vocals with Roger Ilott's artistry on acoustic and electric guitars, and features the duo's son Jordan on drums along with Roger's 1970's Rusty Dusty Bros. band mate Jed Hudson on bass, creating a strong rhythmic feel throughout – folk-rock at its absolute best.
MOON CALLER blasts off with She's Like A Tree, a song for a fabulous friend, Aurelia is Penny's story of emigrating from England by ship at age 14 and Four Horsemen gives a reggae twist to the Ned Kelly tale
by Aussie poet Edward Dyson.
The Circle Game, by Joni Mitchell, is beautifully sung by Penny with a gorgeous acoustic arrangement with touches of Rickenbacker by Roger. Crazy Weather gives us a view of our planet from above – and tells us it's time to act. On O'Mara's Front Verandah we look down at a small town with affection, and The Goldfield, by Bill Scott, with music by Roger, shows us nature's healing power over the scars human beings often cause.
Wet Season Blues is a quirky traditional song from the north of Australia , done in 1930's swing style, while Song Of The Artesian Water , by Banjo Paterson, is given a powerful, yet restrained treatment which underpins the urgency of the lyrics.
Pte. Herbert Thomas Scard tells the tragic tale of Roger's uncle who went to war at 16. Must Have Been The Moon is a song from Roger & bass player Jed Hudson's 1970's band Rusty Dusty Bros, with a fabulous, danceable arrangement from the whole crew.
Armstrong is the story of the unifying power of the first moon landing – sadly so short-lived, while Goodbye To Your Schooldays is about a journey just as important – the journey into adulthood and in Peaceful, by Josh Bogin,
we experience the power of song to give us peace in our harried lives.
MOON CALLER features songs about people, climate, greed, the price of war, human achievement and human frailty, the lessons of history, bushrangers, growing up and growing older. The moon is a strong symbol throughout the album - with its focus on the mysteries and the tides of human life on this planet.
MOON CALLER is a stunning success and deserves an honoured place in the music collection of devotees of music
throughout the country.

An historic collection of Railway songs recorded between 1985-1997.
ROGER ILOTT grew up beside the railway line at Hurlstone Park, Sydney. All through the 1950's along the railway line at Hurlstone Park, ran steam engines hauling goods trains, "When we'd travel to ‘town' on the red rattlers, I loved going past Eveleigh Loco, near Erskineville, where the steam locos sat puffing away. Even on a sunny day the air would be black with soot. It was magic!"

HEY RAIN - SONGS & POEMS OF BILL SCOTT

LULLABIES
PENNY DAVIES
RM089 DOWNLOAD
Penny Davies made this classic album of music for very small children and their parents back in 2002.“Lullabies” features 15 tracks, including seven Australian lullabies, six traditional lullabies
reflecting our multicultural environment
plus three classically composed bedtime songs for children. |
The collection has been recorded with minimal or no accompaniment, so that the melodies and words are easy to hear and learn. Parents and carers will then be able to use the songs to soothe babies and toddlers as they fall asleep.
Legendary Early Childhood Music Educator, John Fierabend commented that "....this is how albums for children ought to be."“By singing to your children,” says Penny, “You create a special bond with them. It has also been scientifically proven that babies who are exposed to music are more likely to be calm, to learn more easily and to become happy adults.”
TRACKLIST: Carra Barra Wirra Canna; Where Do You Sleep? Sleep Now My Little One, Sleep; Suogan; Cradle Song; Little Stranger; Barnyard Lullaby; Hush Little Baby; Garden Lullaby, Mt Tully Lullaby; Bye Baby Bunting;

of the land, from somewhere
out past Camooweal,
trying to hitch a ride

But there it is,
that face we can't forget and away we go, hanging ten
on a wave of love, till we wash up

and it's a long ride -
and a far cry - from this wide land where the sunset awaits
and we ride into it … singing!"

UNDER SOUTHERN SKIES
VARIOUS ARTISTS RM004 (1985) originally released on LP only
The compilation album Under Southern Skies was part of a series of collectively financed albums conceived by Restless Music in the early 1980's. The performers all put in a share of the manufacturing costs, and received a share of the LPs to sell at their gigs. Restless Music provided the studio time gratis. This particular album was coordinated by RON BROWN as it featured artists who regularly performed at Bankstown Folk in New South Wales. Ron and his wife Libby ran Bankstown Folk for many years.
The LP is no longer available, but interested folks can have a professionally duplicated copy on CD, or the album can be downloaded in MP3 format through a special link if you contact us .
“Each of the performers on this record has been stimulated and encouraged through their involvement in the folk clubs of Sydney's south-western area. In particular, they have all performed at the Bankstown Folk Club, which was created through the initiative and enthusiasm of Mary Hartley in 1978. By providing an opportunity for people to share and enjoy their creativity, the club has influenced many lives.” Ron Brown, June, 1985.

WILDERNESS - SONGS OF CONSERVATION & THE ENVIRONMENT
VARIOUS ARTISTS RM005 (1985)
In 1985 a group of Sydney folksingers got together, with Restless Music and The Wilderness Society, to co-fund an album of environmentally friendly music.
Artists: John Warner, Dave De Hugard, John Dengate,
Penny Davies & Roger Ilott, Harry Robertson,
John Broomhall, Peter Kearney,
Jill Stevens & Gill Rees, Sonia Bennett,
Margaret Walters & Margaret Fagan,
Margaret Bradford, Denis Kevans & Liz Rule,
Kate Fagan, James Fagan, Maria Lopes & Amanda Lopes.
Like the trees of the forest, these songs and songsters have great variety and stature. Some are simply beautiful. Others are a cry against the destruction of Australia's heritage. Like a breeze in the forest, a message of care for wild nature moves through every song. People around this country are making a stand against the rapid loss of our wildlife, rivers, forests, and wide open places. It is a defiant stand against the cold might of chainsaws, bulldozers and the pursuit of the short-term dollars. As with all such movements, the conservation revolution is giving rise to its own genre of song. This album is of that genre.
It has been made by singers reaching out to express their love of and concern for Australia's natural beauty. Sometimes the message is harsh. But this collection has a resonance with nature that will warm any Australian heart. These songs have a sentiment of overriding care – a sentiment the world needs to hear. Bob Brown 1985
